The Media Room is a resource for members where they can listen to what proper game/event announcements sound like. Announcements have been provided for a variety of situations. There are even some examples of improper announcements, along with an explanation of why those announcements are considered to be improper.
As the late Bob Sheppard, the greatest P.A. announcer ever, said, "A P.A. announcer is not a cheerleader, or a circus barker, or a hometown screecher. He's a reporter."
In that spirit, examples of announcements that are in the Media Room are not only in line with Bob Sheppard’s philosophy, but also in line with NASPAA’s P.A. announcing philosophy and the NASPAA Code of Conduct.
Currently, the Media Room contains announcements for baseball/softball, basketball, football and soccer.Additional announcements for these and other sports will be added over time.
"The Media Room is the perfect complement to our Archives section (coming soon)," commented Mark Mills, NASPAA Board Member. “What members read about P.A. announcing in Archives can now, in many instances, be demonstrated through announcements in the Media Room."
Announcements that appear in the Media Room have been provided by high school, junior college, college and professional sports announcers who were selected by the NASPAA. Whereas the information being presented about a particular situation may be the same, the way in which that information is presented will be different.
"The Media Room is an important resource for public address announcers,” stated Mike Jansen, Stadium Announcer of the Indianapolis Colts. “The information and examples that are available will give you a clear perspective on how various announcements can be made. Athletic directors and administrators have a variety of expectations for their announcers. Thanks to the Media Room, their announcers will be able to
learn what is acceptable and what is not concerning announcements, which will promote greater professionalismand consistency."
"I'm pleased to have had the opportunity to contribute announcements to the Media Room," commented Gary Williams, Stadium Announcer of the Oakland Raiders. "Our mission to raise the level of professionalism of P.A. announcing is largely predicated on training and education.I can say without any reservation that the Media Room is a tremendous membership benefit and is destined to be one of our mostpopular educational initiatives."
"The Media Room is an excellent tool,” commented Glen Waddle, P.A. Announcer for Ole Miss, Mississippi College the Mississippi High School Activities Association and the Mississippi Association of Coaches. “Experienced P.A. announcers, as well as those who are just getting started, can utilize this resource to fine tune their announcing. Even though everyone's voice and style are different, there should be consistency in the way the information/announcements are made."
